Louis Ghost Chair for KARTELL the Italian manufacturer. He is a very versatile designer not just focusing on furniture but also luxury hotels like Le Royal Monceau in Paris. Even more unusual items like an aluminium lemon squeezer and an optical mouse for Microsoft!
One of 2011's top trends is a statement chair. There are many that have been designed and have stood the test of time. I was inspired to write this after watching a show last night " Design DNA". They showed the "Emeco Navy Chair" which was first made in 1944 for use on U.S Navy warships. It had to be strong enough to hold up to torpedo blasts! It' s aluminium frame proved to be so durable that it exceeded their expectations, some of the original chairs can still be found today in almost perfect condition, with an estimated lifespan of 150 years no wonder they are survivors! They are made from 12 parts in a 77 step process by hand to create one seamless look. These navy chairs can be found in countless design magazines and have even been featured on " Sex in the City". The latest chair to be designed for the Emeco company is the 111 made from 111 recycled pop bottles appealing to today's environmentally conscious consumer. Of all the iconic chairs I have a few favourites for example Phillipe Starcks Louis Ghost Chair for KARTELL the Italian manufacturer. He is a very versatile designer not just focusing on furniture but also luxury hotels like Le Royal Monceau in Paris. Even more unusual items like an aluminium lemon squeezer and an optical mouse for Microsoft! Another chair of my dreams is the Saarinen Tulip chair first designed in 1940. It's famous counterpart is the Saarinen table which is featured in many books and magazines. Voted the 'design of the century' in 1999, the Eames chair by Charles and Ray Eames designed in 1946 is another classic that has been copied many times but never bettered. It is a molded plywood frame that is lightweight , comfortable and durable as well as extremely good to look at! It comes in several colours and can be seen in many contemporary homes with a mid-century aesthetic. I remember a similar design from grade school in the 70`s in England!! Who knew we were so stylish! The famous Eames duo have many more in their portfolio namely the moulded plastic chairs seen in many different environments, conference rooms, school cafeteria's and ultra modern homes. I could go on and on............. as there are so many statement chairs how about you tell me your favourites and why you like them!
